The Railway Board has approved the Mararikulam–Alappuzha rail track doubling project for 220.51 crores, providing a major boost to railway infrastructure development in Kerala.

The project is aimed at increasing line capacity on one of the state’s important rail stretches, helping reduce congestion and improve operational efficiency for both passenger and freight services.
Once completed, the additional track will enable smoother train movements, reduce delays caused by crossing and overtaking operations, and support the growing demand for rail transportation in the region.
The Mararikulam–Alappuzha section forms part of Kerala’s heavily utilized railway network, which handles significant passenger traffic throughout the year.
Railway officials believe the doubling project will improve punctuality, enhance service reliability, and create opportunities for introducing additional train services in the future.
The approval comes as Indian Railways continues to invest in infrastructure modernization across the country, focusing on capacity expansion, safety improvements, and faster connectivity.
The project is also expected to support economic activity in the region by improving transportation links for commuters, businesses, and tourists visiting Kerala’s coastal destinations.
