The Central Government is considering significant reforms to driving licence and vehicle-related services aimed at making processes more convenient for citizens. One of the key proposals under discussion is extending the validity of driving licences until the holder reaches 50 years of age. Currently, licences are generally issued for a fixed validity period and require periodic renewal.
In addition, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is exploring the possibility of making vehicle ownership transfers and permit renewals completely online. This would eliminate the need for many in-person visits to Regional Transport Offices (RTOs), reducing paperwork and processing delays.

Officials have indicated that the proposed changes are part of a broader “ease of living” initiative focused on improving citizen services through digitisation and simplified procedures. The government believes online systems can maintain revenue collection while reducing administrative burdens on motorists.
The proposals are still under consideration and have not yet been formally implemented. If approved, they could benefit millions of vehicle owners and drivers across the country by streamlining key transport services.
