Nandini Harinath was a key member of the ISRO team behind the Mars Orbiter Mission, also known as Mangalyaan, which made India the first country to successfully reach Mars orbit on its maiden attempt in 2014.

The saree gained attention after images of ISRO’s women scientists celebrating the Mars mission went viral around the world. It became a symbol of the blend of scientific excellence and cultural identity represented by India’s space programme.

The museum exhibition recognizes not only the technological achievement of the Mars mission but also the contributions of women scientists who played critical roles in one of India’s most celebrated space successes.

Mangalyaan remains one of the most cost-effective interplanetary missions ever undertaken and significantly enhanced India’s reputation in the global space community.

The inclusion of Harinath’s saree in the museum collection serves as a tribute to the scientists who helped make the mission possible and inspires future generations of researchers, engineers, and space enthusiasts.

The recognition also underscores the growing international appreciation for India’s achievements in science, technology, and space exploration.
