Continuing its rapid growth trajectory, Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala has achieved its highest-ever monthly container throughput by handling 1,30,863 TEUs during May 2026. The milestone marks the first time the port has crossed the 1.30 lakh TEU mark in a single month since beginning operations.
The achievement surpassed the port’s previous monthly record of 1.23 lakh TEUs registered earlier this year, reflecting increasing confidence among global shipping companies in Vizhinjam’s capabilities and strategic location. During May alone, the port handled 55 vessels while maintaining a Gross Crane Ratio of over 30 moves per hour, highlighting high operational efficiency.

Located near one of the world’s busiest international shipping lanes, Vizhinjam is India’s first deep-water transshipment port and is designed to handle some of the world’s largest container vessels. Its natural deep draft and automated infrastructure have helped the port rapidly scale cargo operations.
From July 2024 to May 2026, the port handled more than 20 lakh TEUs and over 950 vessels, making it one of the fastest-growing maritime hubs in the country. Experts believe Vizhinjam could play a major role in reducing India’s reliance on foreign transshipment ports while boosting the nation’s global shipping connectivity.
