Airtel Leads Subscriber Growth in April

Bharti Airtel leads subscriber growth in April 2026 with 34.82 lakh net additions, topping Reliance Jio in wireless and wireline segments as per Trai data.

Bharti Airtel emerged as the top performer in subscriber additions across telecom segments in April, adding 34.82 lakh net new users, according to the latest Trai data released on Tuesday.

The company also edged past Reliance Jio in net gains within the wireline category during the same period.

India’s telecom base hits new peak

India’s total telecom subscriber base rose by 69.5 lakh in April, reaching an all-time high of 133.75 crore. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) noted that the total number of telephone users increased from 133.06 crore in March 2026 to 133.75 crore in April 2026, reflecting a monthly growth of 0.52%.

Airtel and Jio continue strong momentum

Airtel’s total net addition of 34.82 lakh subscribers included 31.39 lakh from wireless services and 3.43 lakh from wireline connections.

Reliance Jio added 30.84 lakh subscribers in total, with 29.42 lakh coming from mobile services and 1.42 lakh from wireline.

Vodafone Idea recorded a modest gain of 53,257 users, while BSNL added 76,175 subscribers. MTNL, however, saw a decline, losing 33,403 users.

Wireless and wireline segments expand

The wireless segment, which includes mobile and fixed wireless access services, grew to 128.89 crore subscribers in April, up from 128.23 crore in March.

In the wireline space, the base increased to 4.85 crore from 4.82 crore. Private operators along with BSNL saw gains, while MTNL and Tata Teleservices reported losses. Tata Teleservices shed 82,407 users, and MTNL lost 76,633.

Broadband continues steady growth

India’s broadband subscriber base climbed to 107.34 crore in April. Reliance Jio maintained leadership with 52.69 crore users, followed by Airtel at 37.3 crore, Vodafone Idea at 12.8 crore, BSNL at 2.7 crore, and Atria Convergence with 24.2 lakh subscribers.
