OpenAI says users in India have created more than one billion AI-generated images using ChatGPT Images 2.0 in less than a month since launch, making India the platform’s largest market globally.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the milestone on X, calling India’s adoption of the feature “awesome to see.” Reports say the rapid growth reflects how generative AI tools are becoming mainstream among everyday internet users rather than remaining limited to designers or developers.
Popular trends include anime-style selfies, cinematic portraits, AI avatars, manga edits, fashion studio visuals, and stylised social media content. Analysts say AI-generated visuals are increasingly shaping creator culture, fandoms, fashion, and online identity across Indian digital platforms.
The feature was launched in India in April 2026 and quickly went viral across Instagram, messaging platforms, and short-video apps. Industry observers believe India’s massive smartphone user base, creator economy, and multilingual internet ecosystem are accelerating AI adoption faster than many global markets.
Experts say the milestone highlights India’s growing importance in the global AI economy, not just as a technology market but also as one of the world’s largest generators of AI-driven digital content and internet trends.
