Indian Railways has launched a major upgrade programme for its premium Shatabdi Express and Jan Shatabdi Express services, aiming to significantly improve passenger comfort, cleanliness, and onboard facilities across key routes in the country, according to reports.

The initiative focuses on modernising these flagship trains, which connect major cities and serve thousands of daily passengers.
Focus on Comfort and Modern Amenities
The Railway Board has directed all zonal railways to inspect each train rake and prepare time-bound plans to fix existing issues. Key improvements include upgraded seating with new upholstery, foldable snack tables, and USB charging ports at every seat.
Toilets will be fully refurbished with improved fittings, better drainage systems, and higher hygiene standards. Coaches will also be redesigned for a smoother ride with reduced vibrations and jerks.
Additional upgrades include improved vestibules and gangways, enhanced LED lighting, refreshed interiors such as flooring and wall panels, clearer destination display boards, and stronger digital passenger information systems. CCTV surveillance will also be installed to strengthen safety and monitoring.
Wide Network Coverage
The revamp will cover around 25 pairs of Shatabdi Express trains and more than two dozen Jan Shatabdi services across India. Officials say the initiative is aimed at meeting rising passenger expectations for comfort and reliability, especially as newer trains like Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat are introduced.
Inspection and Implementation
Zonal railways have been instructed to carry out detailed audits, identify gaps, and implement corrective measures under strict timelines with continuous monitoring.
Once completed, the overhaul is expected to deliver a noticeable improvement in travel experience for lakhs of passengers who rely on these services every day.
