FedEx and Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) have officially begun construction on FedEx’s fully automated air cargo hub, aiming to boost capacity in India’s largest international trade corridor and enhance Western India’s position as an integrated logistics and trade gateway.

The ₹2,500 crore investment will fund a 300,000 sq. ft. regional consolidation and redistribution facility, developed in partnership with Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. (AAHL). Leveraging NMIA’s multimodal infrastructure, the hub is expected to generate over 6,000 direct and indirect jobs across logistics, warehousing, transportation, and related services.
The groundbreaking ceremony included Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis, FedEx President and CEO Raj Subramaniam, Richard Smith, CEO Airline and COO International, FedEx, Kami Viswanathan, President FedEx MEISA, and Jeet Adani, Director AAHL.
Jeet Adani highlighted that the hub aligns with NMIA’s vision of integrated infrastructure to strengthen India’s trade competitiveness. Its proximity to Jawaharlal Nehru Port, industrial corridors, and multimodal networks positions NMIA to support export-driven sectors and Maharashtra’s role as a global logistics gateway.
Kami Viswanathan noted that India’s global trade competitiveness relies increasingly on reliable and fast logistics. The hub will connect FedEx’s global network with India’s fastest-growing trade corridor, enhancing speed, efficiency, and certainty for customers.
The facility will handle trade flows between India, Southeast and West Asia, Europe, and the US. Equipped with automated sorting, dimensional scanning, high-speed screening, and dedicated aircraft bays, it will process inbound and outbound shipments simultaneously. This setup is particularly beneficial for high-value, time-sensitive goods such as electronics, engineering products, pharmaceuticals, and perishables, while also supporting MSMEs by lowering logistics costs and improving turnaround times.
NMIA’s cargo capacity will start at around 0.5 million metric tonnes annually, gradually expanding to 3.25 MMT in its final phase. This phased growth is part of the airport’s long-term strategy to make the Mumbai Metropolitan Region a leading air freight and logistics hub.
After nearly 30 years of operations in India, FedEx strengthens its dedicated presence through this hub, supporting NMIA’s role as an integrated aviation and multimodal trade platform within global supply chains.
