Tesla handed over its first Model Y in India on Friday, with Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik taking delivery at the company’s newly launched showroom in Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai.
Sarnaik called the handover a milestone for electric mobility in the state and said the vehicle would be gifted to his grandson as a symbolic step to raise awareness about sustainable transportation.

Tesla’s First Showroom
The delivery came shortly after Tesla opened its first Indian showroom in Mumbai in July, followed by a second outlet in New Delhi’s Aerocity. Reports indicate the carmaker received more than 600 bookings for the Model Y on launch day.
Features and Pricing
The Tesla Model Y is available in two variants in India:
- Standard Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD): Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom)
- Long Range RWD: Rs 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom)
Both versions have a top speed of 201 km/h. The Standard RWD offers up to 500 km per charge, while the Long Range can reach 622 km. With fast charging, the SUV can add more than 200 km of range in just 15 minutes.
Design and Interior
The Model Y features a clean, aerodynamic exterior with LED lighting and eight cameras for driver-assistance. Inside, the SUV comes with premium materials, two touchscreens (15.4-inch front and 8-inch rear), ventilated seats, ambient lighting, and a nine-speaker audio system.
EV Push in India
Tesla’s entry marks a key moment for India’s electric vehicle market, which has been expanding with growing consumer demand and state-level incentives. The company’s next challenge will be overcoming high import duties that keep its pricing above global levels.
