Government Denies Toll Plans for Two-Wheelers

The government confirms there will be no toll charges for two-wheelers and announces a new ₹3000 FASTag annual pass that will help regular highway users save money and travel without stopping at toll plazas

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has dismissed media reports suggesting the government plans to impose toll taxes on two-wheeler vehicles. He clarified via a post on X that no such proposal exists and that toll exemption for two-wheelers will continue. Gadkari also criticized the spread of unverified information, calling it irresponsible journalism.

NHAI Clarification

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) also confirmed that there are no plans to introduce toll charges for two-wheelers, reinforcing the minister’s statement.

New Annual FASTag Pass Scheme

The government is preparing to launch a new FASTag-based Annual Pass from August 15. This scheme is aimed at providing financial relief to regular highway users. For ₹3,000 annually, commuters will be able to pass through 200 toll plazas—significantly reducing the average annual toll cost from ₹10,000.

According to Gadkari, this initiative will bring down the average toll per crossing to ₹15, potentially saving users up to ₹7,000 each year.

No Satellite-Based Tolling Yet

In April, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) had already addressed and denied reports claiming the replacement of FASTags with a satellite-based tolling system. The ministry confirmed no such decision had been made.

New Barrier-Less Tolling System in Development

Instead of replacing FASTags, the government is testing an advanced ‘ANPR-FASTag-based Barrier-Less Tolling System’ at select toll plazas. This system uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras alongside FASTag’s RFID technology to enable toll deductions without stopping vehicles.

Violators who do not comply with the system will be issued e-notices, and repeated non-payment could lead to FASTag suspension and additional VAHAN-related penalties.

NHAI has invited bids for implementing this system, and a nationwide rollout will be considered based on its effectiveness and user feedback.

Nitin Gadkari confirms no toll tax for two-wheelers, dismissing false reports. A new ₹3,000 FASTag-based annual pass for 200 toll plazas launches August 15, saving users up to ₹7,000 yearly.
