Squadron Leader Manisha Padhi has become the first woman officer in India to be appointed as an Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to a Governor. This historic appointment was made by Mizoram Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati, marking an important milestone for women’s representation in the Indian Armed Forces.

Official Appointment Ceremony

On November 29, 2023, at the Raj Bhawan in Aizawl, Squadron Leader Padhi formally took on her role as ADC. The Governor highlighted this event as a symbol of women breaking barriers and excelling in leadership roles across different sectors.

Role and Responsibilities of an ADC

An Aide-de-Camp acts as a personal assistant to the Governor, supporting official duties and engagements. Typically, Governors have two ADCs: one from the armed forces and another from the police. In this case, Padhi represents the armed forces, while the police service is represented by Zonun Thara. The role requires strong organizational skills and professionalism to assist in smooth governance.

Background and Career Path

Manisha Padhi hails from Berhampur, Odisha, and comes from a military family. Inspired by her father, who was an honorary flying officer in the Indian Air Force, she pursued a military career after graduating from CV Raman College of Engineering. Joining the Air Force in 2015, she has served in several important postings including Bidar, Pune, and Bhatinda, gaining experience in the administrative branch.

Gender Inclusivity in the Armed Forces

Padhi’s appointment is a significant advancement for gender equality in the military. It shows growing acceptance of women in leadership positions and challenges traditional gender roles. Governor Kambhampati emphasized the importance of celebrating such achievements to encourage further progress.

Balancing Career and Personal Life

Manisha Padhi is married to Major Depak Singh Karki of the Indian Army. Both exemplify dedication to service while managing family responsibilities, reflecting the challenges and commitments involved in military careers.

Future Impact and Inspiration

This milestone supports ongoing efforts to promote gender equality within the armed forces. Padhi’s role serves as an inspiration for young women aspiring to military careers, encouraging future generations to pursue leadership roles and break barriers.
