Kerala’s MG Roads Set for Power Line Overhaul

As part of its initiative to modernize the electricity distribution network, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is preparing to replace the overhead power lines on MG Roads in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, and Kozhikode. The KSEB board has approved the proposal, which carries an estimated cost of Rs 179 crore.

Current Challenges with Overhead Power Lines

The existing electrical distribution system in Kerala’s urban areas is well-established but complicated. It serves residential, commercial, industrial, and administrative zones in the cities, but it comes with its challenges. The low-tension distribution system primarily relies on overhead power lines, poles, stays, conductors, and transformers. These elements are situated along roads, often near pedestrian paths and busy traffic areas, causing both safety hazards and obstructions for commuters.

The Modernization Project

With the assistance of the central government’s funding, KSEB plans to replace these outdated overhead lines with modern, safer alternatives. The project includes the installation of armoured underground cables, aerial bunched cables, and ring main unit systems. Additionally, feeder pillars will be set up to streamline consumer service connections.

Once the work is complete, the power distribution along MG Roads will be more reliable, with reduced chances of interruptions and accidents. The project will also help improve traffic flow by making traffic signs, warning boards, and signals more visible and free from obstructions.

Thiruvananthapuram’s Modernization Plan

In Thiruvananthapuram, the modernization will cover several stretches of MG Road and nearby areas. This includes Attakulangara Junction to Kowdiar Vivekananda Park, Overbridge to Thampanoor, Statue to Central Stadium, Secretariat YMCA Gate to MG Road, Palayam to PMG, Muscat Hotel to LMS Junction, and Vellayambalam to Althara Temple. The estimated cost of this work in Thiruvananthapuram is Rs 78.10 crore.

Ernakulam’s Upgrade

In Ernakulam (Kochi), the upgrades will focus on three stretches along MG Road: from Madhava Pharmacy Junction to Rajaji Road, Centre Square Mall to Atlantis Junction, and Atlantis Junction to Thevara Bridge. This part of the project is expected to cost Rs 74.54 crore.

Kozhikode’s Proposed Works

In Kozhikode, the underground cabling will cover areas such as Muthalakulam-GH Road, Palayam-MM Ali Road, Ram Mohan Road, and Pavamani Road. The estimated cost of this work is Rs 26.30 crore.

Impact and Future Benefits

The modernized power distribution systems in these cities are expected to significantly enhance safety, reduce traffic obstructions, and improve overall public convenience. By removing overhead lines and replacing them with underground cabling, KSEB aims to create a safer, more efficient electricity distribution network across Kerala’s major urban areas.
