In India, the Bharat Ratna stands as the highest civilian award, given to individuals who have rendered exceptional and distinguished service in various fields. It is a prestigious honor that carries significant recognition, and the name of the award often comes first whenever awards are mentioned in the country.

Recent Recipients of the Bharat Ratna

Last year, the Bharat Ratna was conferred upon five remarkable individuals: Karpoori Thakur, Lal Krishna Advani, Chaudhary Charan Singh, P.V. Narasimha Rao, and M.S. Swaminathan. These honorees have made profound contributions to Indian society, politics, and science, making them deserving recipients of the country’s most distinguished award.

Along with this honor, the recipient is presented with a certificate signed by the President of India, as well as a specially crafted medal. The awardees also enjoy certain privileges, such as priority in order and invitations to exclusive government events.

What Is the Bharat Ratna Medal Made Of?

The Bharat Ratna medal is not made of gold or silver, as some may assume. According to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the medal is made from pure copper, not precious metals. The medal takes the shape of a peepal leaf and measures 5.8 cm in length, 4.7 cm in width, and 3.1 cm in thickness.

A shining sun, crafted from platinum, is embossed on the surface of the leaf. The edges of the peepal leaf are also made of platinum, which adds to its unique design. Beneath the leaf, the words “Bharat Ratna” are inscribed in Hindi. On the reverse side, the phrase “Satyamev Jayate” is featured below the Ashoka pillar, symbolizing the nation’s commitment to truth and justice.

The Kolkata Mint

The Bharat Ratna medal is made exclusively at the Kolkata Mint, a historical institution that has been in operation since 1757. This mint has been entrusted with the responsibility of crafting the Bharat Ratna medal since its inception. Experienced artisans at the Kolkata Mint meticulously create each medal with great precision and skill.

The Kolkata Mint also produces other prestigious awards, including the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, and Param Vir Chakra. These awards, like the Bharat Ratna, play a significant role in honoring individuals who have made invaluable contributions to the nation.

The Bharat Ratna is more than just a medal, it is a symbol of excellence, dedication, and service to the nation. From the prestigious design to its careful crafting at the Kolkata Mint, this award represents the highest honor that India can bestow upon its citizens. The recognition, privileges, and legacy associated with the Bharat Ratna continue to inspire generations to contribute selflessly to the progress of the country.
