Tesla, led by Elon Musk, has resumed its search for showroom locations in New Delhi, signaling a possible re-evaluation of its Indian market strategy. After pausing its search earlier this year, Tesla has begun initial talks with DLF, one of India’s largest property developers, to explore potential spaces in the capital.

Initial Discussions with DLF for Prime Locations
Sources indicate that Tesla is looking for space ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 square feet for a customer experience center and triple that size for service and delivery operations. Locations under consideration include DLF’s Avenue Mall in southern Delhi and the Cyber Hub complex in Gurugram.
Uncertainty in Tesla’s India Expansion Plans
Despite these discussions, the outcome remains uncertain. One source suggested that while talks with DLF are ongoing, Tesla is exploring other options for showroom locations as well.
Policy Considerations for Vehicle Imports
A key issue still being discussed is Tesla’s approach to vehicle imports. The company is weighing whether to import vehicles under India’s 100% tax rate or benefit from the newly introduced policy that allows certain EVs to be imported at a 15% duty rate.
Government Push for EV Growth
The Indian government is focused on expanding its electric vehicle (EV) market, aiming for EVs to account for 30% of car sales by 2030, up from the current 2%. This push is attracting interest from other manufacturers like Hyundai and Toyota, which are exploring the possibility of entering India’s EV sector.
Tesla’s showroom search comes alongside Musk’s Starlink considering a potential market entry in India, marking a significant step for Tesla’s renewed focus on the Indian market.
