No Beef in Cadbury Chocolates!

Examining the viral claim about Cadbury chocolates containing beef, and why it's incorrect, with facts on Cadbury’s vegetarian ingredients and certification in India

With Diwali around the corner, Cadbury chocolates are a popular treat enjoyed by many. Recently, a viral claim surfaced online, suggesting that Cadbury Dairy Milk products contain beef and urging Hindu consumers to boycott them. The post, which includes a graphic, claims that Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolates are forbidden for Hindus and that all products are Halal certified.

Viral Graphic Based on Misleading Information

The viral post, shared widely on social media, includes a contact number linked to Cadbury’s Australian website, where some products are Halal certified. This, however, pertains to Cadbury’s products in Australia, not India, a crucial detail omitted in the viral claim.

Cadbury India Confirms Products Are 100% Vegetarian

Cadbury India has clarified that all products manufactured and sold in India are 100% vegetarian, indicated by the green dot on their packaging. The company has emphasized that these misleading claims harm consumer trust and urges people to verify information before sharing it.

Green Dot on Packaging Confirms Vegetarian Status

In India, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) requires a green dot to mark vegetarian food products. All Cadbury Dairy Milk products manufactured and sold in India carry this green dot, confirming they contain no non-vegetarian ingredients, including beef.

Halal Certification

The term “Halal certification” used in the claim caused further confusion. In Islamic dietary law, Halal signifies that food is permissible for Muslims to consume. This certification does not imply the presence of beef but only certifies the product as permissible under Islamic law. In India, Cadbury products adhere to vegetarian standards, as verified by the FSSAI’s green dot symbol.

Channeliam’s investigation reveals that this claim is unfounded. Cadbury Dairy Milk products in India do not contain beef, and they fully comply with vegetarian standards. The viral message spreading this misinformation about Cadbury India products is, therefore, inaccurate.

Verifying facts with official sources clarifies such misunderstandings and helps maintain trust in popular brands enjoyed by millions.
