Dubai residents may soon experience a new way to navigate the city, through autonomous electric pods that glide effortlessly above the ground. The Floc Duo rail, showcased at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) pavilion during Gitex Global 2024, promises to revolutionise urban transport by providing seamless connectivity right to passengers’ doorsteps.
Easy Installation and Fast Construction
Hassan Al Mutawa, the rail maintenance director, highlighted the ease of setting up the intelligent system. “It’s affordable and quick to construct,” he stated. Once manufactured in a factory, the components can be assembled on-site without the need for extensive infrastructure. Currently in prototype testing, the system is expected to be implemented in Dubai once fully developed.
Design and Functionality of the Pods
The displayed model features pods designed to accommodate eight passengers each. These pods can operate independently or in coordinated groups, allowing them to connect and detach based on real-time traffic conditions. This flexibility is key to meeting the dynamic needs of urban transport.
Connecting Key Areas with a New Transport Network
Earlier this month, Dubai approved a significant project for a 65km suspended transport system connecting key areas like Umm Suqeim St, Ras Al Khor, and Zabeel. This initiative is part of Dubai’s broader plan to enhance its leadership in various sectors over the next decade.
Versatility in Operations
The Floc Duo rail is designed to operate across different environments, on roads, in tunnels, and on elevated tracks, making it highly adaptable to varying transportation needs. Hassan emphasised its potential benefits for bustling cities like Dubai, stating, “This system merges new technologies with operational efficiencies.” Being driverless and electric, it offers solutions to help reduce road congestion, operating on predefined routes akin to autonomous vehicles.
Integration with Existing Transportation
Hassan further elaborated on the rail’s connectivity with other modes of transportation. “It’s a combination of two systems in one,” he explained. The Floc Duo rail can facilitate first and last-mile connectivity, linking to metro stations, trams, and buses. This integration promises to enhance end-to-end transportation solutions, supporting Dubai’s main public transport framework.
