Dubai International Airport (DXB) has unveiled a new spacious lounge at Terminal 2, exclusively designed for people of determination. This is the first lounge of its kind globally, aiming to provide a calm and accessible environment tailored to various needs, including those with autism, visual impairments, and hearing disabilities.
Thoughtful Design for Accessibility
The lounge is wheelchair-friendly and features contrasting surfaces for people with visual impairments to move easily. For hearing-impaired travellers, seating areas are strategically placed near staff to improve communication. A unique quiet ‘stress relief area’ has been created for individuals with autism, providing a peaceful retreat, while a special section has been built for unaccompanied minors.
Collaborative Effort for Inclusivity
This facility is the result of a collaboration between Dubai Airports and dnata, as part of a multi-million-dirham programme aimed at enhancing services for people of determination. Plans are in place to expand similar lounges to other terminals.
Commitment to Inclusive Travel
Dubai Airports is dedicated to making travel seamless for all passengers, regardless of their needs. Majid Al Joker, chief operating officer at Dubai Airports, emphasised the importance of creating a welcoming space for every traveller. The new lounge is part of a broader strategy that includes the ‘Sunflower Ribbon Programme,’ which discreetly identifies and assists guests with determination, offering priority access through various airport procedures.
Airport Staff Training and Accessibility Initiatives
Dubai Airports also provides special training for staff on how to support travellers with invisible challenges. The airport offers dedicated services such as free parking, specialised taxis, and wheelchair assistance. In 2022, DXB earned accreditation from the Airports Council International (ACI) under the Accessibility Enhancement Programme, further solidifying its commitment to accessible travel for all.
Awards and Recognitions
DXB has been awarded the ‘Autism Friendly’ certification by the Dubai Autism Centre and has become the first international airport to receive the ‘Autism Accredited Centre’ (CAC) designation, reflecting its efforts to cater to the needs of all passengers.
