The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has initiated a pilot operation utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) to automate the detection of damage along the city’s roads. This new approach aims to enhance efficiency in monitoring and managing right-of-way issues and includes inspections of traffic diversions, as announced in a recent social media update by the Authority.
AI Integration in Dubai’s Public Utility Vehicles
Since last year, Dubai authorities have integrated AI technologies to monitor and assess the performance of over 7,200 public utility vehicles, including taxis, limousines, school buses, commercial buses, and delivery bikes. This smart system also tracks the activities of 14,500 drivers, ensuring compliance and enhancing operational oversight under the Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC), a subsidiary of RTA.
Advanced AI Capabilities at Dubai ITS Center
Dubai’s Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) Center, located in Al Barsha, stands as a global leader in traffic management. This centre utilises advanced AI, big data analytics, IoT, and cutting-edge communication systems to manage and optimise traffic flow across Dubai’s expanding road network. The center’s sophisticated “iTraffic” control system leverages AI and big data to facilitate real-time decision-making and enhance traffic management efficiency.
AI Impact on Traffic Safety and Infrastructure in Abu Dhabi
In addition to Dubai, Abu Dhabi has adopted AI-driven systems to analyse crash data, improve road infrastructure, and enhance emergency response times. The implementation of AI technologies has significantly reduced traffic violations and contributed to safer road conditions, as highlighted by Abu Dhabi Police’s Safe City Project. This initiative, launched nearly four years ago, underscores the capital’s commitment to leveraging AI advancements for comprehensive public safety measures.
The integration of AI into Dubai and Abu Dhabi’s traffic management systems marks a pivotal advancement towards smart city goals. By harnessing AI’s capabilities in monitoring road conditions, managing public transport, and enhancing safety measures, both emirates are paving the way for sustainable urban development and improved quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
