Hisar’s Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (LUVAS) achieves a breakthrough in animal healthcare.

The Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (LUVAS), located in Hisar, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully performing cataract surgery on a monkey. This pioneering surgery marks a historic first for the state of Haryana, demonstrating the university’s commitment to advancing veterinary medicine and animal welfare.

A Tale of Compassion and Care

The journey began when a compassionate animal lover, Munish from Hansi, brought the injured monkey to the university’s campus. The poor creature had sustained burn injuries from an electric shock, rendering it unable to walk initially. However, as days passed and diligent care was provided, the monkey gradually regained its mobility. Yet, a new challenge emerged as it became evident that the monkey was experiencing vision impairment.

According to RN Chaudhary, Head of the Department of Animal Surgery and Radiology at LUVAS, the discovery of the monkey’s visual impairment prompted swift action. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the monkey was promptly referred to the university’s surgery department for further evaluation and treatment.

A Critical Diagnosis and Surgical Intervention

Dr. Priyanka Duggal, from the university’s animal eye unit, conducted a thorough examination and diagnosed the monkey with white cataract in both eyes. Moreover, one eye had suffered additional damage to the vitreous, compounding the animal’s visual impairment. With expertise and precision, the surgical team embarked on a delicate procedure to restore the monkey’s vision.

In a meticulous operation, the cataract was successfully removed from one eye, alleviating the obstruction to the monkey’s sight. Post-surgery, the results were nothing short of miraculous as the once visually impaired primate regained its ability to see. This transformative intervention not only improves the quality of life for the individual monkey but also sets a precedent for future advancements in veterinary ophthalmology.

Understanding Cataract: A Common Eye Affliction

Cataract, a prevalent eye condition characterized by the clouding of the lens, affects both humans and animals alike. The partial or complete loss of lens transparency can significantly impair vision, leading to various degrees of visual impairment. By addressing this condition in animals, veterinary medicine contributes to enhancing their overall well-being and quality of life.

The successful cataract surgery performed on the monkey at LUVAS exemplifies the convergence of scientific innovation and compassionate care in the realm of veterinary medicine. This achievement not only highlights the university’s expertise but also underscores the profound impact of veterinary healthcare on animal welfare. As LUVAS continues to push the boundaries of medical possibility, one can only anticipate further breakthroughs in the service of our animal companions.
