Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has officially unveiled its entry into the electric vehicle (EV) market with the debut of the SU7 at the Stride launch event in Beijing. Xiaomi’s founder and CEO, Lei Jun, expressed the company’s ambitious goal of becoming one of the world’s top five automakers within the next 15 to 20 years.
The SU7, set to be contract-manufactured by Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. Ltd (BAIC) in China, is positioned as a midsize premium electric sedan under Xiaomi’s Mi brand. The vehicle will be available in three variants: SU7, SU7 Pro, and SU7 Max, offered in three distinctive paint schemes—Aqua Blue, Mineral Gray, and Verdant Green.
Lei Jun highlighted the autonomous driving capabilities of Xiaomi cars as industry-leading, showcasing Lidar-based features such as self-parking and adaptive cruise control. The vehicle operates on Xiaomi’s proprietary HyperOS operating system.
In terms of dimensions, the SU7 boasts a length of 4,997 mm, width of 1,963 mm, height ranging from 1,440 mm to 1,455 mm, and a wheelbase of 3,000 mm. The electric sedan, with a weight range of 1,980-2,205 kg depending on specifications, aims for a significant market presence.
Xiaomi offers two battery pack options for the SU7—a 73.6kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery in entry-level trims and a larger 101kWh CTB (Cell to Body) battery pack. The estimated range on a single charge reaches up to 800 km. Additionally, Xiaomi plans to introduce a more powerful V8 variant with a 150kWh battery pack.
The SU7 is available in two powertrain options—single motor and dual motor. The single-motor variant achieves a rear-wheel drive with a peak output of 220kW (295 hp), while the dual-motor setup, exclusive to the top-spec trim, delivers an all-wheel-drive system with a combined output of 495kW (664 hp). Xiaomi claims the SU7 is one of the fastest EVs globally, with the motor reaching a remarkable 21,000 rpm.
Although pricing details are yet to be disclosed, Xiaomi’s foray into the electric vehicle market with the SU7 reflects its commitment to shaping the future of the automotive industry.
