Amara Raja’s Gigafactory Sparks India’s Electric Revolution, Ignites Hope

Amara Raja Batteries Limited inaugurated Telangana’s first Gigafactory on Saturday. It will manufacture lithium-ion batteries and is expected to cost Rs.9, 500 crore over the next ten years, making it one of India’s largest gigafactories.

According to media sources, the work began after a ceremony at Divitipalli in Mahabubnagar district, in which state IT and industries minister K T Rama Rao also placed the foundation stone. The ceremony on Saturday marked the start of the Amara Raja Giga Corridor, which would produce lithium cells and battery packs with capacities of up to 16 Gigawatt hours (GWh) and 5 GWh, respectively.

K T Rama Rao described it as a significant step forward in electrifying Telangana’s objectives to be a hub for electric vehicles and sustainable mobility. He further added that this is the largest investment in India in this sector.

The state government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Amara Raja Advanced Cell Technologies Pvt. Ltd. (ARACT), a wholly owned subsidiary of ARBL, in December 2022. During the signing of the MoU, the business announced that it will cost Rs.9, 500 crore in stages over the next ten years.

According to sources, the corporation will invest between Rs.1, 500 and Rs.2, 000 crore in the first phase. The finances will be raised from within the corporation, and the project is scheduled to be completed within two to three years.

Amara Raja Group founder Ramachandra N. Galla remarked, “Amara Raja’s core purpose has always been to build institutions that provide better opportunities to more and more people, and this beginning today will transform this region in the years to come.” Amara Raja’s new factory in Telangana is expected to employ almost 4,500 people and create a comparable number of indirect jobs. It is also projected to make a substantial contribution to the region’s socioeconomic development.

According to rumours, the initial facilities will also contain a first-of-its-kind advanced energy research and innovation centre, complete with modern laboratories and testing equipment for material research, prototyping, and product life cycle analysis.
