In place of the traditional method of padlocks and wire seals, Indian Railways has begun using a GPS-based electronic lock system on a trial basis on its goods and package trains. The change is intended to increase the security and safety of its freight waggons and package vans.

Pilot project:
In Eastern Railway’s Howrah division, the digital lock system has been implemented on a trial basis. The new lock mechanism will be further enhanced for a wider rollout based on user and customer input. The parcel van (four doors) of the 12345 Howrah-Guwahati Saraighat Express received the new lock system.

The divisional railway’s Liluah workshop is also in the midst of installing the digital lock on a full rack of BCN wagons. When the waggons are prepared, Eastern Railway will run them in a closed circuit as an integral rake.

A GPS-based electronic lock is what is it?
These locks have GPS chips installed to track their location as well as the status of their closing and opening. The locks are impregnable. Nowadays, a variety of industries, including e-commerce and FMCG, utilize electronic locks to secure the closed-body vehicles that carry their products on the roadways.

How does the railroad’s GPS-based lock operate?
Every delivery vehicle and freight waggons will have the GPS-based lock installed. By using OTP, authorized commercial workers will lock the vans or waggons at the starting station and then unlock them again at the destination.
