H.E. Shaikha Shaikha Ali Al-Jaber Al-Sabah is a prominent Kuwaiti yoga practitioner, humanitarian, and founder of Kuwait’s first officially licensed yoga studio. She has been awarded the Padma Shri in 2025 for her outstanding contribution to the field of Yoga. She is the first Kuwaiti national and one of eight international awardees to receive the honour this year.

Founder of Kuwait’s First Licensed Yoga Studio
Al-Sabah began her yoga journey in 2001 and established Daratma for Yoga Education in 2014. The name “Daratma” combines the Arabic word Dar (home) and Sanskrit word Atma (immortal soul), reflecting her vision of yoga as both a spiritual and cultural practice. Her initiative led the Kuwaiti Ministry of Trade and Commerce to formally introduce a Yoga education license, opening access to others in the country.

Bridging Cultures Through Yoga and Charity
Beyond yoga, Al-Sabah has consistently worked to unite communities and cultures through her charitable work. She has led initiatives like “Yomnak lil Yaman” in 2021, a fundraising campaign to help displaced and refugee populations in Yemen. She also took part in COVID-19 relief by distributing educational supplies to underprivileged children in Kuwait.

Recognised on Global Platforms
Her efforts extend internationally, including organizing Reiki Jin Kei Do master training and consciousness development sessions at the Monroe Institute in the U.S. Her spiritual and humanitarian focus has earned her recognition far beyond Kuwait’s borders.

Appreciation from Indian Leadership
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Al-Sabah during his Kuwait visit in December 2024. He praised her for promoting yoga and wellness and discussed expanding its reach among youth. President Droupadi Murmu later presented her with the Padma Shri, acknowledging her role in cultural diplomacy and yoga education.

Significance of the Padma Shri
The Padma Shri is one of India’s highest civilian honours, recognizing individuals for distinguished service in fields such as art, education, medicine, public affairs, and social work. Al-Sabah’s recognition reflects India’s appreciation for global champions of yoga and cultural connection.
