Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Vizhinjam International Seaport on May 2, 2025. The Kerala government received official confirmation of the visit from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan are expected to attend the event along with other dignitaries.

Security Arrangements Underway
In preparation for the Prime Minister’s visit, Kerala Police, in coordination with the Special Protection Group (SPG), is arranging a full-fledged security plan. The measures are being planned to ensure smooth and safe proceedings during the high-profile inauguration.
Operated by Adani Ports and SEZ
The Vizhinjam Seaport is operated by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ). The facility is a major transshipment hub and is strategically positioned near the International East-West Shipping Channel. This location makes it the closest Indian port to a vital global trade route that connects the Persian Gulf and Southeast Asia with Europe.
Significant Trade and Revenue Potential
The port has already proven to be economically significant, contributing ₹32 crore in taxes to the Kerala government and generating ₹181 crore in revenue for Adani Vizhinjam Port Pvt Ltd (AVPPL). Its strategic positioning boosts its relevance in international maritime trade.
Technological and Geographic Advantages
Vizhinjam stands out as a deep-water, all-weather port with a steep continental slope. This natural depth allows for easy access by large motherships and deep-draught vessels without the need for regular dredging. The lack of dredging requirements reduces capital expenditure, making port operations more efficient and profitable compared to other similar ports.
Vital Link for Global Shipping
The port lies along one of the busiest maritime corridors in the world, facilitating the movement of oil, raw materials, and consumer goods. Its proximity to this major shipping channel positions Vizhinjam as a key hub for international cargo traffic.
