Ratan Tata, the late industrialist, left behind not just a corporate empire but also a legacy of kindness. His will directed nearly ₹3.5 crore to be distributed among his house staff, office employees, and even a neighbor.

Support for Domestic Staff

Tata’s will ensured that his long-time house staff received financial support. He allocated ₹15 lakh from his estate to domestic workers who had served him for over seven years, distributing the amount in proportion to their tenure. Part-time helpers and car cleaners were also granted ₹1 lakh each.

Among the key beneficiaries were:

  • Rajan Shaw (Cook): Received over ₹1 crore, including a ₹51 lakh loan waiver.
  • Subbaiah Konar (Butler): Bequeathed ₹66 lakh, with a ₹36 lakh loan waiver.
  • Delnaz Gilder (Secretary): Received ₹10 lakh.
  • Driver Raju Leon: Allocated ₹1.5 lakh, along with an ₹18 lakh loan waiver.

Additionally, ₹12 lakh was set aside for the care of his German Shepherd, Tito, with quarterly disbursements of ₹30,000.

Loan Waivers & Neighbor’s Support

Beyond his household, Tata waived significant loans extended to his associates. He forgave a ₹1 crore loan taken by his executive assistant Shantanu Naidu for an MBA at Cornell University. A ₹23.7 lakh loan to neighbor Jake Malite, who studied at Warwick Business School, was also written off.

Distribution of Personal Belongings

Tata’s high-end clothing from brands like Brooks Brothers, Hermes, and Brioni suits was designated for donation to NGOs, ensuring they reached the underprivileged.

Executors & Residual Estate

One-third of Tata’s residual estate, excluding shares and properties, was granted to former Taj employee Mohini Dutta. His Seychelles land, valued at ₹85 lakh, was left to RNT Associates. His two half-sisters, Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy, each received a third of his remaining estate.

His close friend Mehli Mistry inherited Tata’s Alibaug bungalow, while the will’s executors, including Tata Trusts trustee Darius Khambata, each received ₹5 lakh in appreciation for their efforts.

Even in his passing, Ratan Tata’s generosity continued, ensuring the well-being of those who had been part of his life.
