Vandana Luthra founded VLCC in 1989 with an initial investment of ₹20,000, introducing a science-backed approach to wellness and beauty. At a time when weight management and skincare were largely seen as superficial, she focused on evidence-based solutions involving diet, exercise, and clinical treatments.

Overcoming Challenges as a Woman Entrepreneur

Starting a business in a male-dominated industry was not easy. Many doubted the viability of a wellness business led by a woman, and even medical professionals were hesitant to collaborate. Determined to prove her vision, Vandana took a bank loan and established her first center in New Delhi. Within a month, she gained a steady stream of clients, including celebrities. Her commitment to scientific wellness helped her build credibility and trust.

Expanding into a Global Brand

VLCC expanded rapidly, reaching 100 centers by 2010. The company also introduced training programs to empower women in the beauty industry. With a presence in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Africa, VLCC became a global leader in wellness. By 2023, the company had grown to 311 centers and 100 training institutes across 144 cities.

A Multi-Crore Success Story

With a valuation of ₹4,500 crores, VLCC was acquired by Carlyle Group for ₹2,500 crores, marking a milestone in Vandana’s journey. The company generated ₹986.8 crores in annual revenue and trained 10,000 women every year, with 70% of its workforce being women.

Recognition and Legacy

Vandana’s achievements earned her several awards, including the Padma Shri (2013) and recognition in Forbes Asia’s 50 Power Businesswomen. Today, she continues to inspire entrepreneurs, particularly women, proving that resilience, vision, and innovation can transform an industry.
