India has approved its largest-ever defence deal, clearing the purchase of 156 Light Combat Prachand Helicopters from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for ₹62,000 crore. The decision was finalized by the Cabinet Committee on Security on Friday.

Deployment Along Borders

Of the 156 helicopters, 90 will go to the Indian Army, while 60 will be allocated to the Indian Air Force. These helicopters, manufactured at HAL’s Tumakuru plant in Karnataka, will be deployed for operations along the China and Pakistan borders, strengthening India’s defence capabilities in high-altitude regions.

Designed for Extreme Conditions

The Light Combat Prachand Helicopters (LCH) are the only attack helicopters capable of operating at altitudes between 5,000 to 16,400 feet, making them ideal for missions in Siachen Glacier and Eastern Ladakh. Their ability to take off and land in such extreme conditions gives India a strategic advantage in border security.

Advanced Combat Capabilities

The LCH is equipped with air-to-ground and air-to-air missiles and features network-centric warfare capabilities through integrated data chips. These enhancements allow seamless coordination in battle scenarios, improving operational efficiency and force multiplication.

Strengthening India’s Aerospace Industry

Apart from boosting India’s defence preparedness, this massive deal is expected to generate jobs and strengthen the domestic aerospace industry. The government has already signed defence contracts worth ₹2.09 lakh crore this financial year, reinforcing its commitment to self-reliance in military manufacturing.

India’s Defence Expansion Continues

The Prachand helicopters were officially inducted into the Indian Air Force in October 2022, and this new deal marks another step towards modernizing India’s armed forces. With this, India is not only strengthening its border security but also solidifying its position as a major player in the global defence industry.
