Indian Railways is set to introduce its first hydrogen-powered train this month, marking a significant move towards sustainable transportation and zero-carbon emissions. This development aligns with India’s efforts to adopt clean energy solutions in railway operations.

High-Power Engine Developed by ICF

The hydrogen-powered train, built by Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF), boasts an impressive 1,200 HP engine. This makes it the world’s most powerful hydrogen train, surpassing the 500-600 HP capacity of similar trains in other countries. The train will operate on the 89-km Jind-Sonipat route under the Northern Railway’s Delhi Division.

Government’s Push for Green Transport

To accelerate India’s green transportation initiative, the Ministry of Railways allocated ₹2,800 crore in the 2023-24 fiscal year for the development of 35 hydrogen fuel cell-based trains. This initiative aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions in railway operations.

Expected Launch in March 2025

According to U Subba Rao, General Manager of ICF, the hydrogen train is currently in production and is expected to be rolled out by March 25. This launch will mark a new era for Indian Railways, transitioning further from diesel and electric locomotives to clean hydrogen energy.
