Adani Ports Eyes SEZ at Vizhinjam
Harikrishnan Sundaram, Head of Container Business at Adani Ports SEZ, announced plans to develop a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at Vizhinjam, following the success of Mundra port in Gujarat.
Speaking at the session ‘Beyond the Port: Transforming Kerala into a Global Economic Powerhouse,’ he highlighted the importance of an industrial ecosystem for port-led development. He noted that no Indian port has handled one million TEUs within its first year and emphasized the need for infrastructure like SEZs, logistics hubs, and warehouses. He cited Jebel Ali Port’s success in the UAE as a model for Vizhinjam’s growth.
Need for Strong Connectivity
Sundaram stressed the necessity of multi-modal connectivity through road, rail, and inland waterways to ensure seamless trade operations. He urged government collaboration to enhance connectivity and maximize economic benefits.
Kerala’s Energy Capacity Supports Growth
K.R. Jyothilal, Additional Chief Secretary, assured that Kerala has the energy capacity to meet Vizhinjam port’s requirements. He pointed out the State’s reliance on water-based energy and self-sufficiency in solar power as key factors in sustainable growth.
Call for Foreign Investment Policies
Shyam Kapur, CEO of Sharaf Group, suggested that Kerala adopt a more open policy toward foreign investors and residents, similar to the UAE, to attract greater investment and drive economic expansion.
