Nayanthara has publicly criticized Dhanush, accusing him of refusing to allow the use of footage from their 2015 film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in her Netflix wedding documentary.
In a significant legal win for Tamil actor Dhanush, the Madras High Court today ruled in his favor, rejecting a petition by Netflix India to dismiss his lawsuit. The issue arose from a 3-second clip from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan being featured in Nayanthara’s documentary Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale without his permission.
Dhanush had filed the civil lawsuit in November 2024, naming Nayanthara, her husband Vignesh Shivan, and their production company, Rowdy Pictures Private Limited, as defendants. His production company, Wunderbar Films Private Limited, also sought to include Netflix India’s Mumbai-based arm, Los Gatos Production Services, in the case.
Dhanush’s legal team had issued a strong warning, demanding the removal of the disputed footage within 24 hours or face legal consequences, including a potential fine of Dh4.4 million.
In response, Nayanthara took to Instagram, accusing Dhanush of taking his demands to “an all-time low” with the high compensation request. She also thanked filmmakers like Shah Rukh Khan, Chiranjeevi, and Ram Charan for their willingness to let her use footage from their films for the documentary.
While Dhanush’s legal victory is a significant milestone, the public controversy surrounding the case is far from over, with both parties holding firm to their positions.
