Mahindra has officially inaugurated its cutting-edge EV and battery manufacturing facility in Chakan, near Pune. This state-of-the-art plant will be dedicated to the production of Mahindra’s latest ‘Born Electric’ EV models, including the BE 6 and XEV 9e.
A Major Investment for Future Mobility
The new facility is part of Mahindra’s larger strategy to invest in electric vehicle technology, with the company committing Rs 16,000 crore for the FY2022-27 investment cycle. Of this, Rs 4,500 crore has been allocated to the new EV unit, which will focus on developing new powertrains, software, and technologies, while also expanding the overall manufacturing capacity.
World-Class Manufacturing Capabilities
Spanning 88,000 sq. meters, the plant is equipped with the latest technology. It features a fully automated press shop, an AI-driven body shop, and a robotic paint shop. More than 500 robots, including Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), have been integrated into the facility to streamline material handling and ensure precision manufacturing.
Cutting-Edge Battery Manufacturing
One of the standout features of the plant is its battery manufacturing capabilities. Mahindra has developed what it claims to be the world’s most compact battery manufacturing lines. The process utilizes indigenous technology to produce high-performance batteries with industry 4.0 technology. This setup includes patented pallet designs for optimal insulation and accuracy, as well as hidden cell terminal welding for improved performance.
Real-World Testing for Excellence
In addition to manufacturing, the plant also houses a testing facility designed to perform multi-layered end-of-line testing that simulates real-world conditions. This ensures that every vehicle and battery produced meets the highest standards of quality and reliability before it reaches customers.
A Step Forward in EV Innovation
With this new facility, Mahindra is taking a significant step in shaping the future of electric mobility. By investing in world-class manufacturing technologies and focusing on innovation, Mahindra is positioning itself as a leader in India’s rapidly growing EV sector.
