Hyundai Motor Company has introduced its new hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) concept, Initium, at Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang, as part of its “Clearly Committed” initiative. This innovative vehicle showcases Hyundai’s ambition to lead in clean energy transportation, with Initium symbolising a new beginning in hydrogen technology.
Art of Steel Design Language
Initium debuts Hyundai’s new design language, “Art of Steel,” combining urban aesthetics with outdoor capability. It features a robust frame, 21-inch wheels, and a versatile roof rack. SangYup Lee, Hyundai’s Head of Global Design, highlighted that this design emphasises customer-centricity, offering an SUV look that prioritises safety and strength.
Production Timeline
The production version of Initium is set to launch in the first half of 2025. Hyundai plans to showcase the concept at the Los Angeles Auto Show and Auto Guangzhou this November, with aspirations of making hydrogen technology more accessible in the mainstream market.
Impressive Range and Performance
Initium aims for a remarkable range of over 650 km on a single refuel, surpassing its predecessor, the hydrogen-powered Nexo. The vehicle features aerodynamic wheels and low rolling resistance tyres, alongside advancements in fuel cell technology that enhance battery capacity and motor output to 150 kW, making it suitable for daily use and long journeys.
Family-Friendly Interior
The interior of Initium is designed with families in mind, offering ample space, reclining second-row seats, and wide door openings for easy access. Hyundai emphasises comfort and convenience, positioning the SUV as an ideal family vehicle.
Hydrogen Refuelling Route Planner
To tackle the challenges of refuelling infrastructure, Initium includes a built-in route planner that assists drivers in locating hydrogen stations. This feature allows users to view station accessibility, availability, and wait times without the need for separate applications or phone calls, enhancing the overall driving experience.
