Tata Group and Somerville College at the University of Oxford have announced plans for the Ratan Tata Building, designed to improve the college’s teaching and learning environments.
Honouring Ratan Tata’s Legacy
This initiative is a tribute to the late Ratan Tata, facilitated by his long standing relationship with Somerville College. Set to begin construction in Spring 2025, the building aims to promote impactful global research and support the college’s commitment to a sustainable academic community.
A Decade-Long Friendship
The development highlights a decade-long friendship between Somerville College and Ratan Tata, the Chairperson Emeritus of Tata Group. The building will feature seminar rooms, offices, collaborative study areas, reception spaces, and accommodation for visiting scholars.
Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development
The Tata Group will establish the Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development (OICSD) within the new building. Conveniently located opposite the Blavatnik School of Government, this project will occupy the last available development plot in the prestigious Radcliffe Observatory Quarter.
Focus on Sustainability
The OICSD aims to address significant global challenges through research and initiatives that promote sustainable development in India and beyond. By integrating this centre, the Tata Group reaffirms its commitment to academic collaboration and the vision of fostering an innovative educational environment at Somerville College.
A Hub for Transformative Research
The establishment of the OICSD will provide an essential space for scholars and practitioners to engage in transformative research, encourage interdisciplinary partnerships, and develop impactful solutions to sustainability challenges.
Architectural Excellence
Designed by the London-based architectural firm Morris+Company, the Ratan Tata Building will be their first project at the University of Oxford.
A Vision for Development
N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, expressed that research and critical inquiry are vital for fostering development and prosperity in India. He emphasised that this collaboration with Somerville College honours Ratan Tata’s values and that the building will be a hub for timely and essential research for India.
