Operators in the UAE are exploring the potential for additional helicopter ride options to help residents avoid the increasing traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours. Traditionally reserved for aerial sightseeing, helicopter rides may soon serve as a viable transportation alternative for city transfers.
Enhancing Connectivity Between Emirates
Helicopter companies in the UAE are contemplating new services aimed at easing inter-emirate travel. Falcon Helicopter Tours, for example, has already launched a ‘city transfer’ service that connects Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Hazel Anne Herradura, the sales supervisor at Falcon, noted, “The trip takes about 25 to 30 minutes by helicopter—much faster than by road.”
In contrast, driving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi can take over an hour during rush hour, but a helicopter flight from Atlantis in Dubai can land at the Marina Mall Heliport in Abu Dhabi’s Corniche district in under 30 minutes, according to Falcon’s website.
Premium Pricing for Quick Transfers
While the time savings are significant, the cost of helicopter rides can be substantial. Falcon offers three city transfer service packages:
- One-Way Transfer: Priced at Dh11,999 for a one-way trip between Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
- Two-Way Transfer: At Dh13,999, this package includes a two-way transfer with a waiting period of one to three hours.
- Flexible Two-Way Transfer: For Dh14,999, passengers can enjoy a two-way transfer with a longer waiting time of four to six hours.
Falcon employs high-end helicopters for these services, which reflects the premium nature of the experience.
Affordable Alternatives and Future Expansion
Mohamed Yaseen, general manager at Skytech, acknowledged the potential for a market in inter-emirate helicopter transfers. Skytech currently offers flights between Ras Al Khaimah and Dubai, with rates of up to Dh650 for transfers and Dh550 for sightseeing tours.
Yaseen also mentioned future pilot training programs, suggesting that individuals could learn to fly helicopters for personal exploration. “Imagine being able to hop in a helicopter and explore the region as a hobby,” he added.
Additionally, Air Chateau International has announced plans to enhance private helicopter services, enabling passengers to travel from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah in less than 30 minutes. The company aims to establish six to eight new helipad locations by the end of the year, either by upgrading existing helipads or constructing new ones.
Sky Tours on the Rise
As sightseeing flights gain popularity, Falcon Helicopter Tours reported hosting 75,000 passengers in 2023 and targets 90,000 for the current year. Herradura highlighted that they offer six different sightseeing experiences, ranging from 12 to 60 minutes, with plans to expand their routes as Dubai evolves.
One of Falcon’s most sought-after offerings is the 17-minute ‘iconic tour,’ which takes passengers from Atlantis The Palm, past the Burj Al Arab, and near the Burj Khalifa. This aerial journey showcases Dubai’s major landmarks and is a popular choice for celebrations like birthdays and proposals. “Many people celebrate special moments with us,” Herradura said, noting the availability of a VIP terminal where customers can arrange special surprises, such as flowers for proposals.
In summary, the growing interest in helicopter rides for both transportation and tourism highlights the potential for innovative solutions to address traffic issues in the UAE while also offering unique experiences from the sky.
