Vijay Mallya, known for his extravagant lifestyle, once graced the Forbes richest list and owned private airlines before facing bankruptcy and becoming a fugitive. While the headlines often focus on Mallya and his son, Siddharth Mallya, fewer people are aware of his stepdaughter, Laila Mallya. Here’s a glimpse into her life.
Who is Laila Mallya?
After his separation from his first wife, Sameera, Vijay Mallya married Rekha, a neighbour from Bengaluru. Rekha was previously married to Shahid Mahmood and had two children, Laila and Kabir. Following the marriage, Mallya adopted Laila, bringing her into his family.
Education and Career Path
Laila Mallya completed her schooling at Aditi International School in Bengaluru. She then pursued higher education in Massachusetts, earning a Bachelor’s degree, before attending the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Laila is married to investment banker Samar Singh.
Beginning her career as a stylist and jewellery designer, Laila lent her talents to the prestigious brand Vogue. As her skills developed, she launched her own brand, ‘Social Butterfly,’ and collaborated with Kahava, a Bangalore-based retailer, to ensure high-quality product sourcing. Laila also participates in various fashion week events, showcasing her passion for fashion and style.
Laila Mallya and Lalit Modi
Recently, Laila has gained attention for her stunning jewellery designs through her partnership with Kahava. However, her connection to Lalit Modi, the former IPL commissioner, placed her in the spotlight during the IPL scandal.
Following the conclusion of the IPL in 2010, Modi faced suspension due to allegations of misconduct and financial irregularities. An inquiry in 2013 confirmed his guilt, resulting in his permanent removal from the BCCI. This controversy affected Laila as well, prompting her to shift her focus from IPL-related activities to her true passion, fashion.
