Indian Railways has unveiled its list of the highest-earning railway stations across the country for the financial year 2023-2024. This list highlights seven stations that each generate over a thousand crores annually. Notably, no stations from Kerala feature in this elite list. Chennai Central stands out as the sole station from the Southern Railway region to cross the thousand-crore mark.
Top Performers in Revenue
Leading the pack is New Delhi station, which tops the list with a remarkable revenue of Rs 3,337 crore. Following closely is Howrah station, which secures the second spot with an annual revenue of Rs 1,692 crore. Chennai Central also makes the list, earning Rs 1,299 crore, representing South India in the top revenue bracket.
Key Regional Insights
The report includes 28 stations categorised as non-suburban, the largest category by passenger numbers and revenue. Mumbai emerges as a significant region in this category. Despite the absence of Kerala stations in the top revenue list, stations in Kerala are performing admirably.
Kerala’s Performance
Among Kerala’s railway stations, Thiruvananthapuram Central leads with a revenue of Rs 281.12 crore. Ernakulam Junction follows with Rs 241.71 crore. Kozhikode and Thrissur rank third and fourth, respectively, with other notable stations including Ernakulam Town, Kannur, Palakkad Junction, and Kollam Junction in subsequent positions. Thiruvananthapuram Central also excels in passenger numbers, handling 1.31 crore passengers annually.
While Kerala stations did not make it to the top revenue list, they continue to perform well, especially in terms of passenger volume. Indian Railways’ financial figures underscore the diverse performance levels of stations across the country, reflecting regional economic activities and transportation demands.
