Stepping on a business venture requires maturity, courage, and a willingness to take risks. With sincerity, hard work, and passion, some individuals turn challenges into remarkable success stories. One such individual is M. P. Ahammed, founder of Malabar Gold and Diamonds, one of the world’s largest retail jewellery groups.
Ahammed’s entrepreneurial journey began at a very young age. His passion for creating something unique and impactful set the foundation for his future endeavors. At just 20 years old, he ventured into the spice industry in 1978, setting up a business in Kozhikode, Kerala, to sell black pepper, coriander, and coconut. However, he quickly realized this business idea wasn’t viable.
Undeterred, Ahammed’s ambition led him to conduct market research, identifying opportunities in the gold and jewellery sector. This insight resulted in the establishment of Malabar Gold in 1993. Today, Malabar Gold and Diamonds stands as one of the largest jewellery retail chains globally.
Malabar Gold & Diamonds boasts a robust retail network of over 350 outlets across 13 countries. The company’s operations include offices, design centers, wholesale units, and factories spread across India, the Middle East, the Far East, and the United States.
According to the company’s official website, Malabar Gold & Diamonds is the fastest-growing business conglomerate globally, with an annual turnover of USD 6.2 billion (approximately Rs 51,907 crore) and a workforce of over 21,000 management team members worldwide. A News18 report values the company at a staggering Rs 27,000 crore.
Ahammed’s educational background includes studies at Government High School in Kozhikode and a bachelor’s degree in Commerce from the University of Calicut. He is married to K.P. Subaida, and the couple has two children.
