Sujata Saunik, a distinguished Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, has been named Chief Secretary of Maharashtra, becoming the first woman to ever hold this prestigious position. Saunik’s historic elevation follows the retirement of Nitin Keer, her predecessor. She is set to serve in this capacity until June 2025, after which she will retire. Sujata Saunik, a 1987 batch IAS officer, was born on June 15, 1965, in Haryana. She brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having previously served as Additional Secretary in Maharashtra’s Home Department. Saunik’s career is marked by her extensive international experience and her dedication to public service.
Saunik completed her formal education and college studies in Chandigarh. She holds a master’s degree in history from Punjab University, where she excelled academically, earning a gold medal for her outstanding performance. Her commitment to furthering her knowledge and skills is evident from her time as a TechMi Fellow at the School of Public Health at Harvard University.
Saunik’s career also includes significant contributions on the global stage. From 2000 to 2005, she was on deputation to the United Nations Mission in Kosovo, serving as the municipal administrator of Prizren, the country’s second-largest city. During this period, she oversaw numerous community development projects, including the construction of public buildings, markets, hospitals, schools, and essential water and sanitation systems in Prizren and Obolic.
Earlier in her career, from 1992 to 1993, Saunik was deputed to the UN Mission in Cambodia. Her role involved assisting with voter registration and the conduct of the first democratic elections in the Southeast Asian nation, contributing to the country’s transition towards democracy.
Sujata Saunik’s personal life is closely intertwined with her professional journey. Her husband, Manoj Saunik, also a retired IAS officer, shares her legacy in public service. Remarkably, he too has served as Maharashtra’s Chief Secretary, making them a unique pair within the administrative echelons of the state.
