The Election Commission has issued a directive to its observers ahead of the first phase of Lok Sabha polls, emphasising the importance of curbing fake news and misinformation. In a recent meeting, the Election Commission instructed its 127 general, 67 police, and 167 expenditure observers to remain vigilant round the clock, actively working to prevent the movement and distribution of illicit items such as cash, liquor, freebies, and narcotics in poll-bound constituencies.
A total of 102 parliamentary constituencies in 21 states are slated to go to polls on April 19, marking a crucial phase in India’s democratic process.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, stressed the need for polling stations to be equipped with all necessary amenities, particularly to combat the sweltering heat experienced during elections.
During the meeting, observers were tasked with ensuring optimal utilisation of security forces and maintaining strict vigilance over law and order in their respective parliamentary constituencies. The commission emphasised the importance of observers remaining physically present throughout the entire election process.
Central observers were specifically instructed to oversee the fair execution of “vulnerability mapping” by district administrations and to ensure that transportation and communication plans are prepared accordingly to facilitate a smooth electoral process.
