Artificial Intelligence (AI) stands as a transformative force driving innovation across various sectors. However, despite the significant strides made, there are lingering inhibitors hindering widespread AI adoption, particularly in large organisations. A recent study commissioned by IBM sheds light on the prevailing challenges and the imperative for action in 2024 to overcome them.

The ‘IBM Global AI Adoption Index 2023’ reveals a promising trend in India, with nearly 59 percent of large enterprises actively leveraging AI within their operations. These early adopters are spearheading AI integration, with 74 percent having intensified their investments in AI over the past two years, focusing on critical areas such as research and development (R&D) and workforce upskilling. Nonetheless, the journey towards AI integration is marred by persistent obstacles, notably the scarcity of skilled talent and ethical considerations, impeding seamless AI assimilation into business frameworks.

Looking ahead to 2024, the report underscores the urgency of addressing these inhibitors as a strategic priority. A key facet entails equipping individuals with the requisite skills to navigate the AI landscape effectively. Moreover, establishing a robust AI governance framework is deemed essential to instill trust and ensure responsible AI deployment across enterprises.

Commenting on the findings, Sandip Patel, Managing Director of IBM India and South Asia, emphasizes the significance of augmenting AI adoption beyond mere experimentation towards scalable implementation. He highlights the untapped potential awaiting realization and underscores the pivotal role of data and AI governance tools in shaping a responsible AI ecosystem. Patel underscores the criticality of governance mechanisms in mitigating risks associated with AI, including data privacy breaches and ethical quandaries, which have plagued organizations globally.

The report further delineates the current landscape of AI adoption, with 59 percent of IT professionals in large organizations actively embracing AI, while an additional 27 percent are in the exploration phase. Notably, India emerges as a frontrunner in AI adoption, surpassing other surveyed countries in terms of deployment levels.

These insights stem from a comprehensive global survey encompassing 8,584 IT professionals across various geographies, underscoring the widespread resonance of AI adoption challenges and opportunities.

As organizations navigate the complexities of AI integration, the imperative for concerted action in 2024 becomes evident. By prioritizing skill development initiatives and fortifying AI governance frameworks, enterprises can unlock the full potential of AI, driving innovation, and sustainable growth in the digital era. The journey towards AI maturity demands collaborative efforts to surmount barriers and embrace AI’s transformative capabilities fully.
