In the quest for a greener planet, segregating waste and recycling have become pivotal actions for environmentally conscious residents. However, the challenge lies in determining the right place for recyclables and understanding their ultimate destination. Addressing this concern, a UAE startup, Nadeera, has emerged as a trailblazer in waste management.
Smart Solutions for Sustainable Living
Nadeera, an Abu Dhabi-based tech company, has introduced a groundbreaking solution – smart bins equipped with communication capabilities and trash bags adorned with QR codes for efficient tracking. With a mission to divert waste from landfills, Nadeera has strategically placed over 50 of these smart bins in prominent locations across Dubai and Abu Dhabi, including communities in JLT, JVC, Marina, and Dubai South.
The Technology Behind Nadeera’s Smart Bins
Rabih El Chaar, the founder and CEO of Nadeera, sheds light on the innovation, describing these bins as “smart bins with a chip in them.” The bins operate as access-control units, preventing individuals from depositing non-recyclable waste. Moreover, integrated sensors notify Nadeera when a bin reaches full capacity, facilitating prompt collection.
Earning Rewards While Recycling
Beyond promoting eco-friendly practices, Nadeera encourages residents to participate in recycling through its incentivized app. Utilising traceable bags with QR codes, the process involves dispatching trucks to collect recyclables once bins are full. Users receive feedback and credits based on the quality of sorting, redeemable at popular retailers such as Carrefour or Talabat.
“If you’re recycling with us, I would know and give you incentives and rewards through the app for the effort that you are making for the environment,” affirms El Chaar.
Transparency through AI and Blockchain
Nadeera’s waste management system operates on cutting-edge technologies, leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain processes. El Chaar emphasizes the significance of transparency, stating, “Every single transaction that takes place is registered live on a blockchain.” This ensures that waste diversion is verifiable and immutable, providing partners with the assurance that their sponsored projects are making a tangible impact.
A Sustainable Impact: Numbers Speak
During an event held from November 30 to December 12 in Dubai (COP28), Nadeera’s innovative approach showcased its effectiveness. The team recorded over 10 tonnes of recyclables collected within the first 10 days of the event. El Chaar emphasises the environmental impact, stating, “For every ton of recyclables that is diverted from the landfill, it is equivalent to 3.5 tonnes of CO2 emissions that would have been emitted if you had to extract virgin material and manufacture these plastics, aluminium, paper, and cardboard again.”
Nadeera’s integration of technology, incentives, and transparency into waste management marks a significant step towards a sustainable future. As the UAE leads the way in fostering environmentally responsible practices, initiatives like Nadeera’s smart bins set a precedent for global efforts in combating climate change and promoting a circular economy.
