Starting December 1, 2023, the Canadian government has introduced a revised version of the study permit application, affecting international students planning to pursue academic, professional, or vocational courses at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. This update is crucial for all foreign nationals seeking study permits on or after December 1, 2023.
New Study Permit Application Form (IMM1294)
A new version of the study permit application form (IMM1294) was launched on December 1, 2023. It is mandatory for applicants using the IRCC secure account to submit their study permit applications using this updated form. Applications submitted with the old form after December 1, 2023, will not be accepted.
New Requirements
International students are required to adhere to the regulations outlined in their study permit. Maintaining an up-to-date profile on their online account is essential. Understanding the duration of stay in Canada and the necessary steps to take if intending to extend their stay beyond the study program’s end is crucial for students.
Temporary Public Policy
A temporary public policy, effective from June 27, 2023, until June 27, 2026, allows certain foreign nationals with valid work permits to study and work in Canada without a study permit. This policy provides flexibility for those renewing their work permits or holding valid ones.
On-Campus Work for Full-Time Post-Secondary Students
Full-time post-secondary students are permitted to work on the campus of their enrolled university or college without a work permit. This authorization is valid for the duration of their study permit at the institution and during their enrollment in full-time classes, as indicated on their study permit.
Off-Campus Work Regulations
Certain students are allowed to work off campus without a work permit, with specific regulations in effect since June 1, 2014. They can work full-time during breaks between academic sessions and part-time (up to 20 hours per week) during regular academic sessions.
Changes in Work Permit Regulations
The regulations allowing foreign students to work unrestricted hours in Canada are set to expire. International students were permitted to work more than 20 hours per week off campus from November 15, 2022, to December 31, 2023. However, this 20-hour limit will not apply to those with off-campus employment authorization on their study permit until December 31, 2023, under the new work permit regulations implemented in November 2022.
