Najeeb Bin Haneef, renowned as the “Algae Man” and Founder/CEO of Zaara Biotech, launched OBELIA 2.1. This innovative algal artificial carbon trapping system is poised to make a significant impact on addressing climate change.
OBELIA 2.1 Unveiled
OBELIA 2.1, India’s first of its kind outdoor carbon trapping system, boasts impressive capabilities. With a total capacity of 300 litres, it stands equivalent to the carbon absorption of four mature trees. The system demonstrates an impressive carbon absorption rate of 81 kilograms, coupled with a remarkable biomass production of 45.4 kilograms.
Structural Features
The structural integrity of OBELIA 2.1 is underpinned by a metal supporting frame. Notably, the fabrication materials are sourced from recycled plastic waste, amounting to 140 kilograms. This not only underscores the system’s commitment to environmental sustainability but also aligns with the global push towards responsible waste management.
IOT-Enabled Monitoring System
Taking a step into the future, OBELIA 2.1 incorporates an Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled monitoring system for bioprocess management. This feature ensures precision and efficiency in the carbon trapping process, reflecting Zaara Biotech’s dedication to incorporating cutting-edge technology for environmental solutions.
Biomass to Value-Added Products
Beyond its primary function of carbon trapping, OBELIA 2.1 contributes to sustainable living by annually producing 14,000 packets of cookies as value-added products. This exemplifies the versatility of algae, not just as an environmental solution but as a resource for creating economically viable products.
Role of Algae in CO2 Sequestration
Addressing the larger context of CO2 sequestration and climate change, OBELIA 2.1 leverages the efficient and economical potential of algae. Algae-based technologies emerge as one of the most effective biological methods for CO2 sequestration. The resulting biomass can be harnessed for the production of various value-added products.
Global Recognition at COP 28
Highlighting the global significance of OBELIA 2.1, the project is set to present at COP 28 in the UAE on December 6th. This prestigious platform, hosted by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Government Innovation, places OBELIA 2.1 in the international spotlight. The presentation underscores the pivotal role that innovative solutions like OBELIA 2.1 play in the global effort to combat climate change.
Najeeb Bin Haneef’s visionary approach to environmental sustainability, embodied in OBELIA 2.1, marks a milestone in the intersection of technology, ecology, and climate action. As we stand at the cusp of COP 28, OBELIA 2.1 stands as a testament to the transformative potential of algae-based solutions in shaping a more sustainable and resilient future. Join the launch on December 4th at the Kerala Startup Mission complex and witness the dawn of a new era in environmental technology.
