Expo City Dubai, the bustling epicentre of innovation and culture, is making headlines once again with its latest achievement – a Guinness World Record. On a remarkable Thursday, Al Wasl Plaza, often regarded as the beating heart of this futuristic and sustainable community, claimed the title for hosting the world’s largest interactive immersive dome, covering an astonishing 24,038 square metres.
What sets this immersive dome apart is its interactive capabilities, allowing visitors to engage with Al Wasl Dome through their mobile phones and smart devices via augmented reality (AR). Among the captivating experiences offered, visitors can point their smart devices at any point of the 360-degree projection, summoning a mesmerising computer-generated flock of birds to follow their lead.
The spectacle doesn’t stop there, as laser light projections and computer-generated content combine to create a symphony of sensory encounters, engaging both visual and auditory senses.
Alwaleed Osman, the official adjudicator at Guinness World Records, was effusive in his praise: “Al Wasl Plaza stands as a testament to architectural excellence and a distinguished structure that resonates with those who have had the privilege of experiencing it. Its recognition in Guinness World Records underscores the commitment of Expo 2020, and the subsequent Expo City Dubai, to innovation and excellence.”
Bringing People Together: Al Wasl Plaza’s Continual Impact
However, the new Guinness World Record is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to exciting developments at Expo City Dubai. Amna Abulhoul, the Executive Creative Director of Events and Entertainment, spoke enthusiastically about Al Wasl Plaza’s role in fostering connections: “Al Wasl, which means ‘connection’ in Arabic, continues to bring people together, and we are thrilled to share details of our new experiences at the same time as our iconic interactive dome has received this prestigious recognition.”
Among the upcoming offerings, visitors can expect interactive augmented reality experiences, a tribute to the legendary explorer Ibn Battuta, the launch of a sustainable café, and the return of popular events like Winter City and Hai Ramadan, cementing Expo City as a hub of creativity, innovation, and wellbeing.
Creative F&B: Al Wasl Plaza Café
Adding to the allure of Expo City Dubai is the newly opened Al Wasl Plaza Café, a homegrown brand offering a fusion of Arabic cuisine. What makes this café particularly special is not just its delectable fare but also the enchanting ambiance it offers, with 32,000 floral lights adorning its garden.
Abulhoul explained, “The café is one of many new F&B outlets setting up in the city, from plant-based cuisine to high-class dining, and including brand new concepts as well as the return of some Expo 2020 Dubai favourites.”
What to Look Forward To
Expo City Dubai is gearing up to host COP28, the 28th meeting of the Conference of the Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, from November 30 to December 12. In anticipation, Expo City is undergoing transformations, with six pavilions and attractions temporarily closing from November 18 to November 29 to accommodate changes for this significant event.
Art lovers will be delighted to know that the Dubai Calligraphy Biennale, in collaboration with the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, is scheduled from October 21 to 28. Additionally, Japanese VR/NFT artist Aimi Sekiguchi and Emirati painter, photographer, and sculptor Mattar Bin Lahej will showcase their artistic prowess. Sekiguchi’s creations will be projected onto Al Wasl Dome in real-time, while Bin Lahej will bring a dynamic art piece to life on the same iconic canvas.
Music, Arts, and Fitness Galore
Expo City Dubai has a packed calendar of events, including the inaugural Artificial Intelligence (AI) Film Festival (AIFF) and Winter City from December 8 to January 7, 2024. In the coming year, Expo City will host music, food, and arts festival “Break the Block” and the Middle East debut of the electronic dance music festival “Untold.”
Furthermore, Expo City is actively promoting sports and fitness activities, with the Dubai Half Marathon on February 4 and the Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge on February 24 and 25. “Hai Ramadan” will also make a return for the second consecutive year from March 11 to April 10, embodying the true spirit of the Holy Month.
