Kochi, India – In a bid to celebrate the spirit of organ donation and encourage more individuals to come forward as donors, the Heart Care Foundation has announced the organization of Transplant Games, scheduled to take place in Kochi on December 9. This unique event aims to bring together organ donors, recipients, and their families in a sporting extravaganza that not only honors their selfless contributions but also inspires confidence and hope among recipients.

A Multi-Venue Extravaganza

The Transplant Games will be held at three different venues in Kochi, creating an inclusive and vibrant atmosphere for participants and spectators alike. The main venue for the event is the Regional Sports Centre in Kadavanthra, with two additional locations at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kaloor and the Lulu Mall.

Collaborative Efforts for a Worthy Cause

The Heart Care Foundation has joined hands with various organizations and authorities to make this event a reality. The collaboration includes the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO), Kochi Corporation, KMRL, Regional Sports Centre, GCDA, Lulu Mall, Kerala State Youth Welfare Board, and the Liver Foundation of Kerala (LIFOK).

Celebrating the Gift of Life

In a press conference, Heart Care Foundation office-bearers revealed that the Transplant Games are not only intended for organ recipients but also for living organ donors. Furthermore, family members of cadaver donors, who have generously donated organs as part of the government’s Mrithasanjeevani Project, are welcome to participate in the games. The primary objective is not only to honor these selfless individuals but also to boost the spirits of organ recipients.

Spreading Awareness and Dispelling Myths

Dr. Jose Chacko Periappuram, Chairman of the Heart Care Foundation, emphasized the foundation’s commitment to raising awareness about organ donation and dispelling myths surrounding organ transplantation. He expressed the goal of convincing society that, after a certain period of recovery, individuals who have undergone organ transplant surgeries can lead normal, fulfilling lives, just like anyone else.

Inclusivity and Guidelines for Participation

Dr. Joe Joseph, Trustee of the Heart Care Foundation, provided details about the eligibility criteria for participation in the Transplant Games. Participants, ranging from 7 to 70 years of age, are eligible to compete in a maximum of three events. Organ recipients must have completed at least one year post-transplantation and must furnish a medical certificate from the hospital where the surgery took place.

Unveiling the Transplant Games

The official logo and website of the Transplant Games were unveiled at the press conference by I. M. Vijayan, creating a visual representation of the event’s purpose and significance. Dr. Noble Gracious, Executive Director of K-SOTTO, and Adv. S.A.S. Navas, Honorary Secretary of the Regional Sports Centre, were also present, highlighting the broad support and collaboration for this noble cause.
