In a significant announcement, the Central Governmentt of India revealed its decision to equip the Indian Navy with Rafale fighters. The selection of these advanced combat jets is set to bolster the naval capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces. The move comes after a successful trial campaign held in India, where the Navy showcased its operational excellence and suitability for aircraft carriers.

Strengthening Strategic Relationship

French Aerospace Company, Dassault Aviation, expressed its satisfaction with the selection of Rafale fighters for the Indian Navy. According to Dassault Aviation, the decision affirms the exceptional quality of the Rafale and the strong bond between Dassault Aviation and the Indian Armed Forces. It also underscores the importance of the strategic relationship between India and France.

Approval by Defence Acquisition Council

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for the procurement of 26 Rafale Marine Aircraft for the Indian Navy. This approval reflects the Government’s commitment to enhancing the naval defence capabilities of the nation. The DAC meeting also resulted in the AoN for the procurement of three additional Scorpene submarines, further strengthening India’s maritime prowess.

Inter-Governmental Agreement and Negotiations

The Defence Ministry announced that the Acceptance of Necessity for Rafale Marine aircraft has been granted, along with associated equipment, weapons, simulators, spares, documentation, crew training, and logistic support. The procurement will be based on the Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) between India and France. The final price and terms of purchase will be determined through negotiations with the French Government, taking into account comparative pricing of similar aircraft in other countries.

Focus on Indigenous Content and Atma Nirbharta

The DAC also approved the proposal to establish guidelines for achieving the desired indigenous content in all categories of capital acquisition cases. This move aligns with India’s goal of achieving self-reliance in critical manufacturing technologies and the life-cycle sustenance of defence platforms and equipment. By promoting indigenous manufacturing, India aims to enhance its defence capabilities and reduce dependence on external sources.

Future Prospects

The inclusion of Rafale fighters in the Indian Navy’s arsenal marks a significant step towards bolstering India’s maritime defence capabilities. The advanced capabilities and cutting-edge technology of these fighters will provide an added advantage in safeguarding India’s strategic interests. The strategic relationship between India and France is set to grow stronger as they collaborate in defence technology and establish a long-term partnership.

With the procurement of Rafale fighters for the Indian Navy, India continues its efforts to modernise and strengthen its armed forces, ensuring the security and sovereignty of the nation in the face of evolving global challenges.
