UIDAI and IIT-Bombay collaborate to create a touchless biometric system

In order to create a touchless biometric capture system that is simpler to use anytime, anyplace, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-Bombay) inked a memorandum of understanding on Monday.

According to the Agreement, UIDAI and IIT Bombay will collaborate on research to develop a mobile fingerprint capture technology that includes a liveness model.

The touchless biometric capture technology, once built and operational, will enable fingerprint authentication from home, similar to face authentication. The new technology is anticipated to increase the success rate of authentication and collect numerous fingerprints at once. According to a PIB statement, once implemented, it will be an addition to the services already provided by the Aadhaar ecosystem.

Such a system will make use of a common mobile phone that is accessible to most users and has a positive user experience, together with an intelligent combination of signal/image processing, machine learning, and deep learning. This will help the Universal Authenticator become a reality.

With their partnership, the National Centre of Excellence in Technology for Internal Security (NCETIS) of IIT Bombay and UIDAI will collaborate on research and development to create a system for UIDAI.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and IIT Bombay collaborated to create the NCETIS as part of its flagship Digital India Initiative. The NCETIS’s main objective is to provide domestically produced technology for Internal Security forces in a variety of Electronic System Design and Production fields.

UIDAI presently logs between 70 and 80 million Aadhaar authentications every day, according to government data. The Aadhaar number is sent to UIDAI for matching together with the Aadhaar holder’s identifying data, such as biometric or demographic data, during the authentication process. The UIDAI next checks to see if the number matches the data associated with the Aadhaar bearer.

For Aadhaar, UIDAI has been introducing new features and using new technologies. UIDAI introduced a new artificial intelligence-based security system in February for Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication and quicker spoofing attempt detection.
