Google introduces new Play Store regulation for app developers to improve customer control over in-app data.
Google has introduced a new Play Store regulation for applications in an effort to provide customers with better clarity and control over their in-app data. The change instructs app developers to include a “simply discoverable option” for cancelling the account.
Google revealed in a blog post that the new web requirement “should be linked to the app’s Data safety form so that users can request data and account deletion without having to reinstall the app. “While Play’s Data safety section currently allows developers to advertise their data deletion choices, we know that customers prefer a more straightforward and uniform method of requesting them. By creating a more intuitive experience with this policy, we hope to better educate our shared users on the data controls available to them and create greater trust in your apps and in Google Play more broadly,” Google writes in its blog post for developers.
Users will be able to erase all of their in-app material as well as the account they signed up with without having to download the app again. This is a great chance for Google customers who need to re-download the app after deleting it before seeking account termination.
The new Play Store policy is also likely to provide additional flexibility to consumers who do not wish to totally erase their accounts. These users can remove other data only when necessary. While the new Play Store regulation applies to all applications and appears to try to improve data safety for consumers, there is a flaw in the policy that should be noted. Google says that the developers have to delete users’ data along with their accounts unless they have “legitimate reasons” to hold back the data.
As a preliminary step, Google has requested that developers provide additional information about their data deletion practices by December 7. These responses must be provided using Google’s current data security form. Users will be able to see how an app handles account and data deletion “early next year,” according to Google, while developers will be able to request an extension until May 31, 2024.
