‘Umwelt Energy’, a Danish company to invest $850 million in TN for a Green hydrogen and Methanol factory
Alexander Eriksen, the chief executive officer of Umwelt Energy, a Danish business, announced that the company would spend $850 million in Tamil Nadu to build a green methanol facility.
The 2,000 or so acres of land required for the project, according to him, have been arranged.
According to Saibaba Vutukuri, Managing Director of Umwelt Energy India, the plant will be able to produce 1 lakh tonnes of green methanol annually. It would be a fully integrated facility, he claimed, starting with 500 MW of wind-solar hybrid plants that would send power to an electrolyser to create green hydrogen. The carbon dioxide and green hydrogen would be combined to create methanol.
Together with His Royal Highness Frederik, the Crown Prince of Denmark, Eriksen and Vutukuri were in town as a part of an energy delegation that went to the IIT Madras Research Park. The delegation also participated in a conference on “next generation fuels”.
“Our project platforms include renewable power production, electrolysis plants for green hydrogen, and eFuel synthesis plants for methanol, ammonia, kerosine and gasoline,” states the company’s website. Heavy industry players can reduce their CO2 emissions by using the green hydrogen we manufacture, and maritime and aviation customers will be among the off-takers for our eFuel goods, according to the statement.
