NTPC began its Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM) programme in 2018 with the aim to motivate unfortunate girls who are from its project locations. India’s largest integrated energy company, it has received praise for its projects that support women.
What is the GEM programme? The initiative empowers girls from across India by making them aware of the need to have basic education, health, and self-defence knowledge. Thus, they would be able to break the glass ceiling and express their talents and capabilities.
The project supported 2,300 girls across 20 projects by 2019. The girls who belonged between the ages of 10 to 12 were from various locations such as Dadri, Korba, Farakka, Sipat, Singrauli, Kawas, Ramagundam, and Simhadri. They were initiated to academics, yoga, self-defence, fine arts, etc… The project ensures that the girls grow emotionally, socially, and psychologically.
Last year, NTPC recruited its first all-female Engineering Executive Trainees (EETs) to realise its vision of having a women-run operation control room at NTPC. Of them, 30 executive trainees joined the company and underwent a customised induction-cum-training programme at NTPC’s Regional Learning Institutes (RLIs) in Sipat, Vindhyachal, and Simhadri. NTPC vows to expand its project across 35 locations this year
